Grading of Brazilian Sisal fiber
The grading is in accordance with Law 71 dated March 16, 1993 of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Length
Long fiber minimum 90cm
Medium fiber 71-90cm
Short fiber 60-70cm.
Quality
Superior: Cleaned dried and well-combed fiber, light-cream color, in an excellent state of maturity, with accentuated softness, shine and resistance, maximum moisture content of 13.5%, and free of tangles and impurities, pectic substances, mats and knots, leave and husk fragments, and any other defects.
Type 1: Dry fiber, well combed or brushed, light-cream or yellowish in color, in an excellent state of maturity with average softness, shine and resistance, slight variations in color, maximum moisture content of 13.5%, loose and untangled, free of impurities, pectic substances, mats and knots, leaf and husk fragments, and any other defects.
Type 2: Dry fiber, combed or brushed, yellowish or brownish in color, with small greenish extensions, in a good state of maturity, average shine and resistance, slightly rough, maximum moisture content of 13.5%, loose and untangled, free of impurities, mats, knots and husks.
Type 3: Dry fiber, well combed or brushed, yellowish with partly greenish, brownish or reddish shade, in a good state of maturity, average shine and resistance, rough, accentuated differences in color, maximum moisture content of 13.5%, loose and untangled, free of impurities, mats, knots and husks.
Note: although not specified by Decree, the rule of the trade is a tolerance of 20% regarding the length of the fiber. Therefore, long fiber may contain up to 20% of medium and short fiber.
